A couple of days ago I watched an article on BBC where someone built their hometown in Minecraft. This article talked about Eric, a Minecraft player, that released a revolutionary Minecraft map called ‘‘fake London’’ on March 24 of 2019. This map consisted of a Minecraft exact replica of the famous city in England. This Minecraft city has every detail that the real city has. Also, his project is one of the most ambitious projects in Minecraft. When I started reading the article I was shocked by how much effort he put into it. Imagine building an entire city in a game. I have played Minecraft since 7 years ago. And since then I have always enjoyed spending time playing with my friends; especially, during the quarantine. After a while, I finished reading the article, and my first thought was doing the same this guy did. At first instance, I thought that was impossible because I have tons of homework to do. So I come up with a key question, what was better, build my real house in Minecraft or being responsible?

As you may have guessed, I chose to build my house in Minecraft. Before I started to do anything I wanted to start by researching previous works similar to the one I was going to make. To my surprise, I found astonishing information. There have been numerous projects of people not only building their houses but entire massive cities. Even though this sounds absolutely crazy, there is a large number of people who nowadays create exact replicas of real cities. Some cities that have been copied are Indianapolis, Chicago, Midtown Manhattan, Medieval London, and the Republic of Union Islands. After a while, I decided to start my ambitious project of building my house in Minecraft. First, I built the margin of my house including the walls and roof. Then, I started adding furniture. However, I got stuck since the proportions of the house with furniture and the size of the blocks was not accurate. My couch was bigger than my roof. In short, I had a big problem and only one solution; I will need to make a proportional scale.

Furthermore, in my scale, I decided we will have to make that a Minecraft block equals less than a meter to specify details in furniture. After doing the math, I decided every Minecraft default block will measure 25cm x 25cm/0.25m x 0.25m. Consequently, if my house has an area of 180m² and a perimeter of 372m, I will need 1488 blocks in order to build my house in Minecraft. Then, I figure out that 40% of the area of the house is furniture. Meaning that if we add furniture to the house, we will need 288 blocks to cover 72m² (40% of the house’s area.) Hence, if I want to make my house in Minecraft I will need a total of 1776 blocks.

After numerous headaches and hours of playing, I finished my virtual home in Minecraft. I will show you pictures of the house next to the pictures of the real house.

To conclude, I learned that technology can be used in many ways. Is astonishing how young people can take advantage of their creativity in infinite ways. Do not let anyone say you are not capable of doing whatever you want. Come on, take anything, and put your creativity into it. The worst thing that can happen is that you learn from your mistakes.
